Humility

I Peter 5:6

Therefore humble yourselves under the mighty hand of God, that He may exalt you at the proper time.  NASB

Humility is not something that we learn much about in this world.  It means a modest or low view of one’s own importance; humbleness.  We learn that we are to get our way by demanding it and requiring others to do things for us.  So how do we humble ourselves before God?  This means submission to God in all things.  We must give every aspect of our lives to God and let Him direct us instead of doing what we want.

I have a friend who while in his 30s thought that he should be a deacon at his Church.  This did not happen for another decade.  The key to his desire was that he put it in God’s hands.  He now sees that he was not ready and takes this key role very seriously unlike how he viewed it 20 years ago.  In God’s time, all things are perfect.  He prepares us for what we want during the humbling weight of time.

When we have moved in time from glory to glory, this is the growth and maturity that we need to do God’s will.  This can seem long and boring.  It can be frustrating.  Waiting on the Lord is very humbling.  I read this week that the word for wait in Hebrew is an action verb.  We think of it as quiet and uneventful.  Humbling ourselves to the hand of God is filled with change and growth which is everything but quiet and uneventful.  I know that I do not always enjoy it, but I have learned that God’s will and timing are the best!

We should never exalt ourselves.  We all dislike arrogant people who are always promoting themselves and taking over things.  So, how do you present yourself to others?  How do you pray to God?  Everything should be placed at the foot of the cross for God to decide when and how you are promoted or given more responsibility.  All of this begins in prayer.  This prayer should be very humble letting go of your desires and letting God decide for you what is best.

God will use you.  In His time, all things are made perfect.  Please do not fret or worry.  Just wait on Him.

The chapter goes on to tell us more:

I Peter 5:7

Casting all your anxiety on Him, because He cares for you. NASB
