Family

Ruth 1:16

Don’t ask me to leave you and turn back.  Wherever you go, I will go; wherever you live, I will live.  Your people will be my people, and your God will be my God. NLT

I have found that we have different kinds of family.  There is the family that you are born into which is your original family.  There is the family that you marry into.  And there is the family that you choose in life.

The key to being a part of whatever family that you have is loyalty and service.  I will take loyalty over beauty or wealth every time.  Who do you call when you need help?  I know better than to call my original family because not only would they not help, but they would also explain in detail how the situation was my fault and that I deserved it.  Yes, you got it even though I am related by blood to my family, I can’t count on them.  Are you in this situation?  If so, thank God for the family that you have which may be by marriage or friends that you can count on.  I have found that God fills in the gaps in our lives with people who really do care and will help us.

To have a family just like having friends, we have to be a positive part of the family.  We must be loyal to our family.  We must spend time with them.  We must serve them.  What can you do today for those in your family?  What do you want to do for those in your family?  A really good place to start is to spend quality time with them.  Please be sure to express how much your appreciate them and love them as often as you can.  Giving of yourself, your time and your things are important to building quality family.

The other important side effect of your loyalty to your family will be the favor that you find with others and God.  We love and take care of our family because we want to, but others are watching and appreciate it.  My sister had an accident while on vacation last week.  I offered to help, but my niece had it under control.  I made sure to express to her several times how I appreciated her loving expressions towards her mother in this situation.  When I get the chance I will also do something for her to further express my gratitude.  It always feels good to be appreciated even when we don’t need it.

The following is Boaz’s explanation for why he is being so good to Ruth:

Ruth 2:11

But I also know about everything you have done for your mother-in-law since the death of your husband.  I have heard how you left your father and mother and your own land to live among complete strangers.  NLT
