Freedom

Galatians 5:13

For you were called to freedom, brethren; only do not turn your freedom into an opportunity for the flesh, but through love serve one another. NASB

Jesus’ first miracle of turning the water into wine is one of my favorites. I love it because He is obeying His Mother and also making wine. When I am challenged by people who believe that Christians should not drink alcohol, this is the first thing that I mention to them. The Bible is clear that we should not drink until we are drunk which is wrong, but a glass of wine is not a sin. Now if you plan to drink and someone who is with you is an alcoholic, then you should not drink or tempt them to fall back into destructive habits.

I love the freedom that we have in Christ. We have the freedom to do whatever we want as long it does not hurt us or someone else. As with anything, I believe in moderation or balance with it. Always temper everything with love.

So do we have freedom to sin as we please? We are saved, forgiven. Why can’t we do whatever we want? The truth about freedom is that we can do what we want, but that does not make it right. If our sin is bad for us, then we are not loving ourselves or those that love us as we should. There are two choices in life, the narrow way and the world’s way. Which will you choose? I was told once that I always choose the hard way in life or the narrow way. This is true because I want to be in God’s will for my life which requires better choices. It’s not fun. As a friend said to me this weekend, we’ve given up all the “fun stuff” in our lives. The interesting point to this is that both of us wouldn’t choose any other way because we know that with these choices we are within God’s will for our lives. The world says that we have no fun because we do not have sex outside of marriage, do drugs, lie, cheat, smoke or steal. I know the Truth that sets me free! All I need is God and His will for my life. The rest of it will burn away.

The following verse is spot on for this topic:

Act as free men, and do not use your freedom as a covering for evil, but use it as bondslaves of God. NASB
