Praise You in This Trial

1 Peter 1:6-9

In this you greatly rejoice, even though now for a little while, if necessary, you have been distressed by various trials, so that the proof of your faith, being more precious than gold which is perishable, even though tested by fire, may be found to result in praise and glory and honor at the revelation of Jesus Christ; and though you have not seen Him, you love Him and though you do not see Him now, but believe in Him, you greatly rejoice with joy inexpressible and full of glory, obtaining as the outcome of your faith the salvation of your souls. NASB

I have often heard people say that God will not give you more than you can handle. I do not find this anywhere in the Bible. Why do people say that? What is the truth about trials in our lives?

It seems that almost everyone that I know is going through trials at this time. A neighbor is on hospice with terminal cancer. My friend is fighting lung cancer. Another friend has to now be a caregiver for her husband who is very sick. My sister is caring for her husband with stage 4 liver cancer. My daughter has health issues. My clients have many issues ranging from money to marriage and beyond. A different friend just had to put her mother who has Alzheimer’s into a facility. Why does life seemed to be filled with such things?

The truth is that bad things happen. And unfortunately, they will continue to happen to us and those that we love.

The real truth is not that trials come, but how we react to these trials. The first step is to take it to the Lord. Lay the trial at the feet of Jesus. He can and will assist you through it if we give it to Him. Ask Him how to proceed in the matter and do what you feel led of God to do.

Seek God’s advice in His Word about your trial. This is where the verse that I led with comes in. Our faith takes us to God. He tells us that we are being tested to refine us or make us better. We are blessed that we believe even when we have never seen Christ. So, we must choose joy in our trials and praise God in the storm.

There is a great song by Casting Crowns that goes like this:

Praise You in This Storm

I was sure by now, God you would have reached down And wiped our tears away, Stepped in and saved the day. But once again, I say amen That it’s still raining As the thunder rolls I barely hear your whisper through the rain I’m with you And as your mercy falls I raise my hands and praise The God who gives and takes away

And I’ll praise you in this storm And I will lift my hands That you are who you are No matter where I am And every tear I’ve cried You hold in your hand

You never left my side And though my heart is torn I will praise you in this storm

I remember when I stumbled in the wind You heard my cry you raised me up again My strength is almost gone how can I carry on If I can’t find you As the thunder rolls I barely hear you whisper through the rain I’m with you And as your mercy falls I raise my hands and praise The God who gives and takes away

And I’ll praise you in this storm And I will lift my hands That you are who you are No matter where I am And every tear I’ve cried You hold in your hand You never left my side And though my heart is torn I will praise you in this storm

I lift my eyes unto the hills Where does my help come from? My help comes from the Lord The maker of heaven and earth I lift my eyes unto the hills Where does my help come from? My help comes from the Lord The maker of heaven and earth

And I’ll praise you in this storm And I will lift my hands That you are who you are No matter where I am And every tear I’ve cried You hold in your hand You never left my side And though my heart is torn I will praise you in this storm

And though my heart is torn I will praise you in this storm
