Proverbs 21:21

He who pursues righteousness and loyalty finds life, righteousness and honor. NASB

I watch people pursue things every day. Some are after wealth, others are after position and others seek the love of man or woman. What should we be seeking? The Bible is clear that we are to first seek the Kingdom of God. God is righteous, loyal, life and honor. Why do we chase after other things?

We are an easily distracted people. Whatever is the most advertised, shiny or popular is what most people seek. Fame and fortune are the two most sought after things.

The most important thing to me in a person is loyalty. I will take loyalty over intelligence or beauty every time. This verse places honor and righteousness right up there with loyalty. I agree.

How do we develop these traits? The first step is to understand what they are. I can’t count the number of times that my kids as children were hurt by “friends” who were not loyal or honorable. I have had some of it in my life as well. Have you? I live by the saying treat others as you want to be treated. I want loyal, honest and honorable friends. So, I have to be these things as friend to others. When I tell someone that I will do something, I will do it or let them know why I couldn’t do it. We rely on each other and must be loyal, dependable in all of our dealings with each other. When I mess up and can’t do what I committed to, I must communicate with my friend as soon as I know to not leave them in a bind. I do not always get it right, but my goal is this every single time.

If you are unsure about what these traits are, the best examples are found in the Bible. I think of Ruth who stayed with her mother in law after her husband died and Jesus who did what God called Him to do by giving His life so we can be saved.

What kind of friend are you? Please take a personal inventory and be honest with yourself about it. The good news is that no matter where you are in the process your Father in heaven will help you to be loyal, honest and honorable. If you are teachable, then you can be the type of person that Jesus showed us.

The following verse further encourages us:

Luke 8:15

But the seed in the good soil, these are the ones who have heard the word in an honest and good heart, and hold it fast and bear fruit with perseverance. NASB
