Luke 10:37

And he said, “The one who showed mercy toward him.” Then Jesus said to him, “Go and do the same.” NASB

This is what follows the story of the Good Samaritan. When asked who was a good neighbor to the wounded man, Jesus responded with this verse.

I raised my children in Church and they mainly went to Christian School for their education. When they did something wrong and it came time for consequences, they often pleaded for me to give them grace and mercy. Even as young children, they knew that they were wrong and that the unmerited favor of mercy could save them. Sometimes, I did give mercy and other times they had to suffer the consequences of their actions. This is what a good parent does in discipline. I always smiled when they did this because I was reminded how we are when we do wrong and ask God to help us with the consequences.

We need God’s mercy and grace because we are sinners. So when others do wrong to us or need help, what should we do? Of course, we are to help them. Nothing changes a person than the undeserved mercy from someone they have hurt or a stranger who is generous with no motive.

Love gives us the strength to show mercy to others. It is the love of God flowing through us. It is how He touches people to change them and show His love.

Recently, I had a man do something wrong to a family member, very wrong because I had warned him of the possible problem that he chose to ignore. He also lied to me repeatedly. I have had to deal with this man one on one several times. When I prayed about it, God reminded me to show grace and mercy to him. God also reminded me that I am responsible for my behavior towards the man.   I really would like to speak the truth to this man and say many things, but God will deal with it. I am not the judge. In this situation and many others, we have to be the hands and feet of God and show mercy so His love can change lives.

I deal with myself by remembering all that God has forgiven me and the grace and mercy shown to the sinner that is me. Let’s be the hands and feet of Jesus by showing grace and mercy every day as often as it is needed.

The following verse encourages us:

Psalms 145:8

The Lord is gracious and merciful; Slow to anger and great in lovingkindness. NASB
